Blessed is the man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
Yesterday Senator Jeff flake of Arizona demonstrated what this verse is describing. Senator Flake gave his speech in the US Senate asking people to stop pretending nothing bad is happening with our chief executive. He called for a return to the values the United States has always stood for. It was a bold and risky move. He knows it is the end of his political career in the Trump era but he had to do it. He chose principal over popularity. He declared, "We never, ever should lend support to someone who is doing something wrong no matter who that person is." He decried the constant barrage of lies that are thrown around in Washington under the current administration.
It sounds easy just to base your life on true principles. But in reality whether it is Jeff Flake who is unhappy with the government or someone facing an indiscretion at his job, life has a way of forcing us to make choices and re-evaluate the principles we base our lives on. We define who we are by those choices. "The proof is in the pudding", as my mom would say.
Today I'm grateful for the courage of Senator Flake to speak up for his convictions. It is the kind of thing you expect a member of the church to do. Surely he has been guided by the hymn, Choose the Right, which he has sung countless times in his life.
